Hunting Trip # 3 - "Pleasant"

A muddy truck and $70 poorer...

This weekend Lucas and I went Deer Hunting up by Snowville. It is on the border of Utah and Idaho. Once again, hunting in Utah was very different than the California hunting I am used to. There were hundreds of hunters. Much more hunters than there were bucks. We started out on the journey Friday evening after taking tests and working all Friday. We road into snowville to find a cool little cafe for a late dinner. It was called Mollies Cafe. It was really fun because we were the only ones in the cafe and the waitress was an middle aged redneck woman who was loud and entertaining. We sat and joked around with her for about an hour then decided to take off. We arrived at our destination at about 11:30pm. On our way through private land we saw three deer walking along the road. Two of them were bucks. The biggest buck was a really nice 3 by 4. We admired it for a minute then drove out to the spot where we thought we would start our morning hunt.

The next morning we woke up at 6:00am and prep'd for the morning hunt. Right before sunrise we hiked down to the edge of a mountain and sat and looked over the canyon to the other side. It was a beautiful and perfect spot for deer hunting. I was sat there for about an hour and a half without spotting anything. Then on our way back to the truck we saw a herd of 8 deer or so off in the distance. I only saw them for a minute and didn't get a chance to see if they had antlers. After a good long uphill hike to our truck we drove around for another few hours and didn't see anything. We did pass a quad with a small forky buck in the back. That gave us hope.

After eating an oatmeal lunch we napped 30 minutes and headed out again. We drove on some really intense trails. A couple of times we were reallky close to tipping the truck. And the trails were very narrow. They were actually quad trails but don't tell anyone. We hiked a few nice canyons and thought for sure we would run into something there but didn't.

After driving everywhere and seeing nothing we decided as it was getting dark to go out into the flatland and see if we couldn't catch something on the public land on their way to the hay field private lands. There were doe's already in the hay fields. Didn't see anything and headed home. This trip was much more pleasant than the last... less hiking and more driving. Hopefully I can find someone to go out there with me next weekend. Anyone want to come out and hunt with me? This is the last weekend of the hunt. We'll see what happens.

I gotta get me a deer or something!
